According to a professional hairstylist, here’s how to easily achieve the NYFW look

This year’s New York Fashion Week was a whirlwind of dreamy colors and stunning silhouettes. But we couldn’t help but notice one look dominating the catwalk: the braids.

Microtresses, boxer braids, hidden braids, braided fabric – Australian luxury brand Bronx and Banco delivered perfectly braided looks in their new Tulum-inspired collection. We’re here to say it all.

Bring back the chic summer camp

Growing up with thick hair in the heat of the Midwest meant braids were my favorite summer style. It was not a fashion choice; it was a way to avoid heat stroke.

But after this year’s Fashion Week, Bronx and Banco changed the braid game forever. I’m done with the awkward, lumpy French braids of my youth. Hello, ultra-glam braids.

Braids are a difficult hairstyle to master, so we asked the experts.

NYFW Head Hairstylist and UNITE Hair Creative Director Gary Baker told us how to transform this look from summer camp to glamor.

Preparing the braid

Baker knows that all good braids start with a good base. Therefore, Baker prepared all the braids of his models with U: DRY Dry Shampoo.

Your hair type and oil level will determine which dry shampoo formula to use. For very smooth or thick hair, try the Plus + formula. The High formula adds an extra dose of volume for flat, fine hair.

Once your hair is prepared, you are ready to begin weaving. Baker begins by rubbing a spoonful of CONUNDRUM paste in his hands.

As you braid, the styling paste gives texture and shine to your braid. And if you’re like me and Youtube tutorials are your best friend, here’s a great tutorial for micro (or boxer) braids.

You can add ribbons to your micro braids. Please refer to the Beth Minardi template for all of your Greek Goddess inspiration needs.

Lock the gaze

To finish off the look, Baker uses SECOND Day to tame flyaways or frizz. Then he does a full spray of TEXTURIZA to add volume, texture and fullness. Bonus: TEXTURIZA spray can also be used as a thermal and UV protector.

For extra long-lasting hold, Baker completes the look with GO365 hairspray. This scalable, non-flaking spray is excellent for all hair types.

And when you’re done rocking your braids, you can pull them back and rock mermaid hair the next day. You get two hairstyles for the price of one! I’ll take it, thank you.
