Health Benefits of Owning a Sauna

Sauna statistics

This country loves its saunas. In fact, there are currently over one million saunas, representing an $8 billion market in the United States alone. That seems like a high number, doesn’t it? Well, that’s nothing compared to Finland, which really loves its saunas. Finland has the highest percentage of saunas per capita than any other country on the planet. With a $20 billion market, there are now over 3 million saunas in Finland. We may be behind them in terms of consumer demand, but we are catching up fast.

Why have sauna sales increased?

To better understand why the demand for saunas has suddenly increased, we spoke with Tina Adams, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Bathing Brands. We wanted to know how the sauna market has developed in recent years.

How has the sauna market grown?

“Sauna sales have doubled over the past two years, reflecting unprecedented interest in backyard recreation, personal wellness and improved quality of life,” Adams said.

The health benefits that come with owning a sauna are perhaps at the top of the list for consumers considering buying a sauna for their backyard. A fact that Adams acknowledged, “In addition to making people feel good, heat therapy has proven benefits for heart health, pain reduction, and the immune system.”

America is developing a culture for saunas

“There is a sauna bathing revolution brewing,” Adams said, “we are culturally discovering the value that heat and cold can have on us physiologically. To experience an outdoor sauna, and even better, next to a swimming pool provides an experience that only nature can provide. Adding a sauna to a swimming pool allows for the invigorating dip or cooling down that is so essential to the sauna experience.”

Of course, as swimming pools have grown in popularity over the years, the sauna industry would also see a new influx of consumers. Being a very cold country, we can understand why finland is so popular for saunas. America however does not have the sauna culture that Finland has, nor the climate. Yet demand has exploded. With sales doubling, the question arises, why are Americans developing such an appetite for adding saunas as outdoor amenities?

How did saunas suddenly become so popular?

There was a time when a sauna was an unlikely piece of equipment to be found in the garden. Nowadays, finding a sauna in an elegantly landscaped outdoor setting is much more likely. Market penetration has been considerable in recent years. Saunas are now on the list of top backyard amenities, along with swimming pools and hot tubs.

“One of the hottest trends in the backyard right now is the installation of outdoor saunas,” Adams said, “but it’s pool and spa dealers that are really facilitating this trend. Modular or barrel saunas are easy to display, simple to install and can help grow their business. »

It’s a fact that as guardians of the backyard, pool builders and designers have the greatest influence on the homeowner. When it comes to influencing purchasing decisions on particular outdoor living products and gear, no one has more influence in this regard.

The ease of facilitysmall footprint and relatively small cost compared to other landscaping such as swimming pools and spas, make it an attractive value-added service that builders can add to the list of products they offer their customers.

The fact that supply demand starts at the dealer level starts at the dealer level is not lost in Adams. “Local pool and spa dealers are the most viable resource to display, promote and meet consumer demand,” she explained.

During trade show season, saunas certainly had a huge presence on the show floor this year. “We saw growth in all markets,” Adams said. “Where there is a swimming pool, the potential for outdoor sauna sales growth is greatest,” she explained.

Adams hopes for even greater adaptation in the near future: “Integrating an outdoor sauna kit into existing projects is a surefire way to increase sales. We are thrilled to see our dealers leading the sauna revolution at the retail level.
