A new salon in Babylon Village is missing one thing: a group of stylists. Instead, Good Day Hair Salon, which opened this month, rents space to hairstylists who can do their own work, from booking appointments to collecting payment, says owner Crystal Freyer. .
Freyer, who has been a hairstylist for 15 years and whose last job was at Salons by JC in Bay Shore, which rents separate rooms to hairstylists, says she jumped when the opportunity at that store presented itself.
“I love Babylon Village: I grew up there,” says Freyer. “And I thought other people would like to do what I was doing, but in a living room.”
Currently, Freyer and her best friend, Sarah Andersen are the only two hairstylists, but Good Day Hair can accommodate five.
Hairdressers rent space and Freyer provides shampoo, conditioner, towels, capes, trays, snacks and beverages. The stylist only needs to bring their tools and coloring supplies to work on their clients. They set their own prices.
To rent a space, the hairdresser should already have an audience. “It’s really for a seasoned hairdresser who has a clientele,” Freyer explains, adding, “You become your own boss.”
At Good Day Hair, the atmosphere is relaxed, with plenty of seating for people to just relax in and a hutch full of books to read or borrow.
“I didn’t want it to be a super crazy scramble and people going in and out of a living room,” Freyer explains. “It’s really an individual experience that everyone lives with their hairdresser.”
Services include neutral haircuts, styling, color and balayage, a hair painting technique that gives it a natural, sun-kissed look.
Freyer and Andersen’s haircuts start at $60; color is $120+ and extensions are $500+.
