NEAR ISLE, Maine – After opening Studio Maven in May, Mikaela Sue Henninger, first business owner and hairstylist, hopes to continue the friendships she has made with customers since returning home in 2016.
Located at 55 State Road in Presque Isle, Studio Maven has three mirror stations where Henninger provides hair, eyelash and eyebrow services. Henninger worked at Ulta Beauty in Bangor after obtaining her certification in cosmetology.
In 2016, Henninger returned to her hometown and gained experience as a hairstylist at local salons including Great Beginnings Hair Boutique and Bella Vita. With Studio Maven, Henninger achieved his goal of running his own business.
Henninger noted that the name of his salon comes from his desire to make the salon an open and customer-friendly place. The word “maven” is synonymous with “expert” and Henninger wants her clients to feel free to ask questions while she works.
“The world of hairdressing can seem intimidating and when you’re in that world it’s easy to take that for granted. I want to create a space where everyone can be an expert, ”Henninger said. “I’m very cool and laid back so I want people to feel comfortable here.”
As a permanent resident of Presque Isle, Henninger knows the value of community ties. She said family, friends and even other salon owners have supported her as she seeks to carve out her own niche in the industry.
The opening of Studio Maven also comes at a time of great personal change for Henninger. She and her husband Zachary Henninger will welcome their first child, a daughter, at the end of August. She is also the mother-in-law of Chance, Zachary’s 5-year-old son.
“It’s exciting to watch the business grow as our family grows,” said Henninger.
For Henninger, her job doesn’t just mean serving her clients, but also getting to know them like family. During a recent hair coloring, Raylee Shaw of Caribou, a longtime Henninger client, said their conversations were the best part of her visits to Studio Maven.
“She’s a very open-minded person and created a great atmosphere for people,” Shaw said. “I’m coming because I love the interactions we’ve had.”
The feeling is mutual for Henninger, who said forming relationships with different people was what drew her to cosmetology.
“When you meet people in this field, you really get to know them. There are clients that I met when they were in high school who now go to college and get married, ”Henninger said. “I like talking to people and being a part of their life.”
