New hair salon and hair salon aims to break down barriers

“Everyone is trying to change our downtown and make it better. We’re thrilled to be a part of it,” says the owner of Fabstyle, located in downtown Orillia

A new hair salon and barber shop has opened in downtown Orillia.

Fabstyle owner Emily Baker has been in the industry for 28 years, but this is the first time she’s owned her own boutique.

“We have two apprentices here that I teach,” she explained. “My business is based on mentorship. I constantly teach my staff and improve their skills.

Baker views her business as an opportunity to pass on the torch of what she has learned over the years. She named her new store after her mentor, Fabio Sementilli.

“He introduced me to the show business in hairdressing,” she said. “I had the opportunity to participate in New York Fashion Week and I was an artist at Wella Company for 15 years.”

She decided it was time to pay it forward like Sementilli would with promising young professionals.

Although there are plenty of hairstylists in town, Baker would rather work with the competition than against it.

“We’re really trying to break down this barrier that everyone has in town where everyone has to compete with each other,” she said. “We should really work together. There are enough customers for everyone.

Fabstyle recently partnered with stylists from Sharp Image Salon and Spa and Avaia Salon to provide haircuts to homeless people in and around Orillia.

Baker says she’s on a mission to change the way business is done in the hair industry, and to do that, she believes her boutique needs to be different. That’s why she incorporated a hair salon into the business.

“I added this because I saw the potential in our hairstylist, Justin (Mcwhinnie),” she explained. “Barbershop is really becoming a trend, so I thought it was important to add that.”

Mcwhinnie is a former Baker’s student who taught in the hairdressing program at Georgian College.

“He’s an amazing barber,” she said. “I see a lot of art in him.”

Baker, a graduate of Park Street Collegiate Institute, says Orillia is the perfect location for her innovative hair salon and hair salon.

“Everyone is trying to change our downtown and make it better,” she said. “We are thrilled to be part of it.”

Although Baker has traveled across North America, she says there is nowhere she would rather do business than in Orillia.

“I love it,” she said. “I’m happy to still live here. He has charm now.

Fabstyle is located at 19 Mississaga St. W. It is open Tuesday through Saturday and appointments can be made by calling 705-259-4404.
