Personalization options in Pokémon Sword and Shield are everywhere. On the one hand, there is a huge selection of clothing and color options for everyone. Trainers can also collect a plethora of gymnastic uniforms, but can only wear the original during gymnastic challenges, and makeup options can hardly be called such when there is hardly any makeup. Inconsistencies persist in the barbershop where trainers find an adequate selection of hairstyles, but on closer inspection, one realizes that all the options are painfully basic.
Hairstyles are models toned down from current trends like pixie cuts, waves and bobs. However, Game Freak overlooked some basic trends including the ever popular side shave, or any asymmetrical cut for that matter. There is a serious lack of boldness in the options available and this is truly out of place given the edgy tone in the Galar region. Between the ragged jean options and punk rival Marnie with her leather and studded supporters, there’s a rebellious undertone throughout the game.
Team Yell is rocking Mohawks and boy trainers can choose long wavy locks or their own side shave fade, but girl trainers are stuck with a selection of tasteless housewife hairstyles. Buck up Game Freak, even salon workers wear the ever popular side shave. How ironic to incorporate the hairstyle into the game via the haircutting NPC, but without making it a portable option!
Not only are girl trainers deprived of a proper side shave option, the only short and even slightly edgy option is a painfully basic pixie cut. Anyone looking to improve their appearance will not be very happy to settle for this option. Frankly, it makes the ten-year-old coach look like a soccer mom trying to get hooked. The only hairstyle that comes close to a side shave is the long “Sideswept Waves” and that’s because the hair is pulled back over one shoulder, giving the illusion of an asymmetrical cut.
In today’s society, not including some more wacky hairstyles looks like cowardice. The varied styles of feminine side shaves are a trend right now. Not adding even a generic side shave or asymmetric option at all was a mistake. It is evident through the various NPCs and the vast clothing options that the developers have developed and modernized the stylization of the characters. Even the Drizzle starting evolution gets a cranky side shave hairstyle. With all the disenfranchised Grunts, the dirty and ragged fashion, and the added mockery of our pokemon and hairdressers donning the hairstyles we want for ourselves, it would be much appreciated if we gave the sneakers the option of a shave lateral, please and thank you!
